Yoga in the boardroom (2)

My yogic inspiration for today is about the concept of sthira sukham, the principle of effort and ease. This principle's idea is that most meaningful results, also yoga poses, are created through both conscious effort and ease; hard work and easy energy at the same time.

Most readers of this article will probably have learned that making an effort and working hard is key to achieving success. "Give the best you can" is an inner voice that I hear and see a lot in the people I coach (and in my own inner dialogues). "Just relax and let things happen" is a conviction that I hear a lot less.

The principle of sthira sukham believes that extensive willfulness can create tension and become limiting. To fully manifest potential, next to getting things done, exercising effort and hard work, some form of ease is needed: being (mentally) present, standing still, bringing attention inward, breathing, observing with love without doing, being aware of feelings and intuition and enjoying the moment are examples of this.

What is your source of disciplined energy?
What are you willing to make an effort for?
What is your source of light-footed energy?
What do you do to allow for ease in your life?
How often do you take the time to reflect on these questions?

I hope you took the effort to read until here... and that this article brings you in touch with the instant source of ease in yourself...just take a deep breath and create some space...:-)

Yoga in the boardroom (1)

The Sanscrit meaning of the word yoga is "union" or "connection". The purpose of practicing yoga is to create awareness and enlightenment by bringing together parts that have become seemingly separated; that we have lost connection with in our perception. The practice of yoga is about (re-)connecting body, mind and soul within a human being with the beings around it and in the end with the universal energies all around.  This is a series of short inspirations on how the principles of yoga can bring more connectedness into boardrooms and organizations: for individual leaders, teams and whole organisations.   The first idea of creating more connectedness is by creating moments and awareness throughout your workweek to meet people in your organisation to understand and connect with their purpose. Those daily interactions do not have to be long or planned. The idea is to create more consciousness in yourself when you meet people to see who they are and what drives them. Simple questions like "what has inspired you lately" or "what creates energy in you" or "what (value/s) is/are important to you in life" or "what do you want to bring" or "what is most important to you in your work or life" can be wonderful openers and connectors of hearts and minds. I know that for most people it takes courage to ask those questions and I would like to invite everyone who reads this to do it anyway. The word courage comes from the French word "coeur" which means heart... What are your inspirations for more connectedness?

Cultivating an open mind

During a dinner this weekend I sat next to the CEO of one of the biggest construction firms in our country. He was asking lots of inspiring questions; like "what is the key principle for your coaching practice" and another one was "what is your recipe for success" and even better: he really seemed interested...

I have always been thrilled by leaders who stay open, curious and inquisitive despite the fact that they are in powerful positions which tend to give them the illusion that there is nothing to discover anymore and that they have all the answers. People who stay curious and resist this appeal to know it all, keep asking questions and stay interested are inspiring to me. That is one of the reasons I founded Inspiration & Discipline...to bring learning, leadership inspiration and follow-up discipline to leaders in organisations!
